Grant Available:

  • Commercial business grants of up to £24,999 for property improvements.

About the Grants

The Anglesey Small Business & Commercial Improvement Grants

Grant funding is available for eligible qualifying businesses in town centres across Anglesey.

Small grants of up to £2,000 are available to support businesses who want to make purchases of essential items to help them grow.

Larger grants of up to £24,999 are available to businesses looking to make commercial improvements to their premises, including improvements to their buildings' fascia.

 

Businesses may apply for both grants, up to a combined maximum of £24,999.


This funding has been acquired specifically to support town centres and high streets on Anglesey.

This grant is funded through the UK Government's Shared Prosperity Fund. Môn CF is working with the Isle of Anglesey County Council, as part of our ongoing partnership to improve local communities and support small businesses.

The eligible areas are part of the Isle of Anglesey County Council Joint Local Development Plan.

What Funding is Available?

Small Business Grants

Support for Essential Business Purchases

Small grants of up to £2,000 to support small businesses' purchases of essential items that continue healthy business growth.

Support for Building Improvements or Fixed Assets

Large grants of up to £24,999 for businesses looking to make commercial improvements to their premises, including improvements to their buildings' fascia, internal improvements, reasonable professional fees.

Grants of up to £2,000 to Support Small Business Growth on Anglesey

Grant funding is available for small & medium sized businesses in town centres across Anglesey.

Small grants of up to £2,000 are available to support businesses who want to make purchases of essential items to help them grow.

 

Eligible items can include:

  • Tools/equipment

  • Furniture

  • I.T. equipment

  • Training

  • Advertising

  • Websites

  • Small-scale property improvements to business premises.

Non-Eligible items include:

  • Stock

  • Consumables

  • Running costs and overheads

  • Rent/Lease/Rates/Wages

  • Travel expenses

Commercial Improvement Grant

Grants of up to £24,999 to Improve Commercial Premises on Anglesey

Grant funding is available for small and medium sized businesses in town centres across Anglesey.

Large grants of up to £24,999 are available to businesses looking to make commercial improvements to their premises, including improvements to their buildings' fascia.

Applicants may also receive the Small Business Grant but the maximum will be adjusted accordingly.

 

This grant uses an intervention rate of up to 75%.

This means grant funding will only cover up to 75% of the total expenditure for your project.

For example:

You're carrying out £10,000 of works to a business premises.

Based on an award of 75% you would have to contribute £2,500 (25%) of your own funds, and the grant will cover the remaining £7,500 (75%).

Your application MUST meet one or more of these key SPF W1 (High Street & Town Centre) outcome objectives, which include:

1.Re-occupying Empty Town Centre Commercial Premises (if evidenceable as SPF target output)

2. Visibly improving Town Centre Commercial Premises (if evidenceable as SPF target output)

3.Genuinely creating new jobs (if evidenceable as SPF target output)

4.Genuinely safeguarding existing jobs (if evidenceable as SPF target output)

Before you can make an application for this funding, you must first complete an Expression of Interest form, linked below.

Eligible Town Centres

This grant is exclusive to businesses in the centre of the following Anglesey towns: Amlwch & Amlwch Port, Beaumaris, Benllech, Cemaes, Holyhead, Llanfairpwll, Llangefni, Menai Bridge, Rhosneigr, and Valley.

The funding for this grant has been secured to help improve the quality of our town centres.

Eligibility Criteria

Each grant has its own eligibility criteria which determine the kind of purchases that can be made.

See the information below for full details on the criteria for each grant.

Small Business Grant

As well as the location eligibility, additional eligibility criteria does apply to the grants.

 

To Apply you must be:

  • Aged 16 years of age or older.

  • Be operating a business within the locations outlined.

  • A small of medium-sized business wholly or mainly operating on Anglesey.

Your business must be based in one of the eligible areas outlined above.

Non-Eligible Criteria

Some businesses may be excluded from funding due to the potential risk associated with their services. These include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Aesthetics (Botox, fillers, etc.)

  • Holiday Lets (unless main income)

  • Subcontractors

Commercial Improvement Grant

Grant sum of up to £24,999 (Minus any sum awarded under the Small Business Grant)

Grant rate of up to 75%

Minimum project cost of £5,000

Reclaimable VAT is ineligible

To be eligible must achieve one or more SPF W1 outputs and/or outcomes, listed below:

  1. Re-occupying Empty Premises (if evidenceable as SPF target output)

  2. Visibly improving Town Centre Commercial Premises (if evidenceable as SPF target output)

  3. Genuinely creating new jobs (if evidenceable as SPF target output)

  4. Genuinely safeguarding existing jobs (if evidenceable as SPF target output)

Proposals will be assessed competitively

Grant sum or rate may be less than those requested

Grant funds will be awarded based on the greatest impact

Eligible costs may include the following

  • External building improvements

  • Internal building improvements

  • Other fixed assets that are needed to generate the outputs/outcomes

  • Directly related capital fees eg architect, planning

Operating costs are ineligible (eg rent, utilities, marketing)

Individual invoices valued under £50 will be ineligible

Premises must be located in recognised town centre

Premises must be wholly or mainly in commercial use

Residential use is ineligible

Use and works must satisfy all relevant statutory consents (eg planning, building regulations, listed building, conservation area, electrical, fire)

Open to occupying small & medium sized business

Where necessary and a clear need for a grant is evidenced, the grant may be applied for by a property owner who lets their property to a qualifying business that is not in a position to apply or co-fund the works

Freehold owner must consent to works in writing

Need for grant needs to be shown 

Grant should not be used to subsidise property owners who have failed to repair or maintain the premises despite the clear financial means to do so eg have been receiving rent but have failed to maintain the property from that income

Value for money needs to be met and evidenced

Costs may be checked by an independent QS

Written quotes to a common specification need to be requested - one for costs under and three if exceeding £10,000 - and three competitive written tenders requested where costs exceed £30,000

Applicant may not claim for own labour costs

If there is grant support for providing publicly visible written material (eg signs, menus) these should be fully or partly in both English & Welsh languages.
