David approached the LIFT programme in September 2016, having been unemployed for six months. He was hoping to return to the construction industry, but identified that he needed to update his qualifications and gain more recent experience within the sector.

David was booked onto Môn CF’s ‘fundamental’ courses, and went on to achieve the following qualifications:

  • QA Level 2 Award in the Principles of Manual Handling
  • QA Level 1 Award in Fire Safety Awareness
  • QA Level 2 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work
  • QA Level 2 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace

David also attended the Site Safety Plus course as the first step on his journey towards gaining a CSCS card. Whilst preparing for the next step – the Health, Safety and Environment test – David began volunteering on Môn CF’s Environmental Team. He quickly became a real asset to the team, and impressed the Academy Mentors with his personal qualities and practical skills. He was put forward for three Lantra Awards – Trimmers, Pedestrian Mowers, and Ride-On Mowers – and passed them all with flying colours.

In March 2017, after receiving support from Môn CF to revise, David passed the Health, Safety and Environment test and gained his CSCS card. He also started attending the weekly driving theory sessions held in the Pod. David obtained his provisional driving licence through the ‘Journey to Work’ project and, after passing ten mock tests, was put forward for his theory test. David passed this in June 2017, and has since received practical driving lessons and booked his test.

David recently started work as a Grounds Maintenance Operative with North Wales Housing. All of the general and sector-specific qualifications, plus the relevant practical experience gained at the Training Academy, made him the ideal candidate. He hopes to pass his practical driving test soon, which will enable him to use a company vehicle for work. We wish David all the very best for the future, and hope to see him tearing up L plates very soon!
